If you have ever found yourself dodging fried chicken at a concert, then you are probably attending a show by Southern Culture On The Skids. Coming out of North Carolina in 1983, the band has been playing their own style of Dixie-fried Southern rock for more than 30 years. Rick Miller started the band, taking advantage of his southern roots as the son of mobile home factory manager and substantial time in southern California, picking up on surfing and rockabilly. While the band started as a rock band, soon they added pedal steel and accordion and moved to a country-focused sound.

SCOTS has moved on and off various record labels over the years, but for a time they were on Yep Roc, and in 2013 the band contributed to a Yep Roc release called Mondo Zombie Boogaloo’ a collection of new material from three bands – Southern Culture on the Skids, The Fleshtones, and Los Straitjackets. The bands also toured together, making for an interesting night of music wherever they went.

And the fried chicken? It is a staple of a SCOTS performance that at some point, the band will toss fried chicken into the crowd.
